Black Seed Farms 400 Trees Planting Day
2806 Thompson Rd, Langley
This is a family friendly event beginning with introductions and instruction from Whidbey Island Conservation District, followed by a riparian buffer planting to protect the wetlands at Black Seed. Help plant and mulch over 400 bare root trees! Potluck lunch. Snacks and water provided. Black Seed grows food to gift and sell to BIPOC communities, facilitates youth education, and helps to establish economic stability and a dignified, culturally appropriate food supply chain.

Farmer Town Hall, sponsored by the Agriculture Resources Committee for Island County (ARCIC). We will be sharing our recommendations for those Island County’s Comprehensive Plan elements relating to agriculture.
We look forward to your feedback as we work towards making sure that farming is more accurately represented in this important county planning document. In addition, we want the County to adopt policies that will help secure the future of farming in our community. Please join us!

Tilth Conference 2024
Registration extended to Friday, November 1 to attend the Tilth conference November 14-16. From a meeting of nearly 800 farmers, gardeners and food system activists in Ellensburg, WA, in 1974 to a network of thousands of food system professionals and activists spread throughout the Pacific Northwest, the Tilth movement has had a profound impact on our region’s food culture over the last 50 years. From influencing regional, statewide, and national policy to hands-on programs centered in communities across Washington State, partnership is at the core of everything we do.
This November 14-16, hundreds of farmers, organizations, businesses, wholesalers, food systems professionals, researchers, and educators will join to work, learn, and build solidarity as we honor our history and look forward to our next 50 years. Join us to celebrate, reflect, network and grow!

Cocreating Agroecology for Food Systems Transformation.
The concept of agroecology, which is based on principles of ecology and social equity, offers a framework for redesigning our food and farming systems. Join with other small farmers, Indigenous leaders, food system organizers, and academics to engage with innovators at the forefront of this evolving, worldwide, and dynamic movement.
This workshop, presented in partnership with Washington State University and Oregon State University, will showcase ongoing projects that are laying the groundwork for innovative research partnerships to address specific challenges faced in the Pacific Northwest. Listen, learn and join the dialogue to become part of the change.

Kid’s Scavenger Hunt and Local Bux
On Sunday, September 29, South Whidbey Tilth Farmers Market will have its last kid’s scavenger hunt for the season. Kids who complete the scavenger hunt will earn a $2 South Whidbey Tilth Local Bux to purchase a kid’s size portion of produce. The South Whidbey Tilth Farmers Market is held on Sundays, 11 -3 until October 13.
Pick up a Scavenger Hunt list at the Welcome Table at the market entrance.
Go through the market and find all the items on the list.
When you’ve found them all, redeem your list for a $2 Local Bux bill at the Welcome Table.
You can spend Local Bux to buy a kid’s size portion of fresh fruits, veggies and herbs at the market.
Adults are welcome to help the little ones.

Come explore art materials and leaf shapes from vegetables and herbs growing in gardens. Whidbey Island artists Jean Stark and Paula Richards will be there to guide and inspire you. Make a drawing with patterns and color, leave it as a picture or cut shapes out to make a windsock. Art ideas will be on hand along with art materials and fresh leaves to explore the shapes and smells from the September garden.
